Making Another Giant Leap after Ten Years of Achievements
Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Headquarters Curator / Shih Ru Chang
2014 marks the tenth year of the International Fo Guang Yuan Young Artist Awards. This annual event, with creative themes in honor of good deeds and good people, as well as their merciful hearts, has drawn some 300,000 children from across the globe to take part. There are many touching stories behind every work of art by the participants. The children have expressed their concern towards, and efforts in, cherishing life through their paintings and it is expected that the event can create an environment of truth, goodness and beauty, where children can grow up with pure minds. It is also hoped that the children can draw good deeds they have seen, and learn how to keep a “good” mind and practice “good deeds” in their daily life.
In 2004, the year when this painting contest was launched, the theme was: “Master Hsing Yun in the Eyes of Children”. There were some 1800 paintings from home and abroad in the contest, with the creative media ranging across 3-D, graphic art, sketches, watercolor, etc. Though many of the children taking part had not seen the Master himself, they created works of diverse styles by referring either to the Master’s photos or to the stories their parents had told them about him. Regarding their paintings, we will be stunned by their wild imagination and creativity, as well as how differently Master Hsing Yun could be portrayed in the infinite realm of children’s minds. Their paintings, though not necessarily lifelike, truly deserve our admiration as the children have created art, one piece after another, whether such works were derived from what they had thought, what they had seen, or what had appeared in their dreams.
The creative theme “Kind and Compassionate Avalokitesvara” was the theme for 2008 and 2009. The “Mercy Group”, echoing the theme, was added to the contest to encourage the participation of physically or mentally challenged children. The goddess in the eyes of the children may take the form of statues in temples, or surprisingly, of firefighters or their mothers. No matter how they perceive or imagine the goddess, the images of the goddess represent childhood innocence and the children’s expectations of the world. Every single work is so close to our minds and so touching that they fully embody the objective of this contest.
2010 and 2011 focused on the theme “Practice Three Acts of Goodness: Pure Minds Radiate” with nearly 16,000 works from children in 13 countries: Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Canada, the US, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, South Africa, China and India. The tenth award-winning artworks of 2014 reached the number of 326. In addition to publishing an album to memorize the event, we will also have touring exhibitions in 14 different venues domestically and abroad, which include Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, USA, New Zealand, France, and the UK. In total we received close to fifteen thousand entries. From Three Goodness –‘give people confidence, give people joy, give people hope, and give people convenience’ to Four Giving, using the means of artistic creation, participants cultivate good behavior of Three Goodness in daily life, learn to respect, give gratitude, love and devote to others, and show the goodness in human nature.
Here I would like to extend my gratitude to all the schools, groups, teachers and parents involved in this event, as well as the Ministry of Education; Buddha’s Light International Association R.O.C.; Kids Art Education Academy, ROC; Kaohsiung Children Art Education Institute; and numerous judges, professors, staff members and volunteers. In particular, I am highly grateful to Master Hsing Yun for his support and guidance for the event. Exhibitions at various Fo Guang Yuan art galleries, schools, or organizations are attributed to the Venerable Master Hsing Yun Public Education Trust Fund. The Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery has hosted this painting contest by upholding Fo Guang Shan’s philosophy of “promoting Buddhism through culture”; it aims to cultivate children’s sense of morality through the art of painting. Whether it is the nationwide children’s art exhibition held regularly, or the outdoor children art camp, the ultimate goal is for the children to have a happy childhood and build their self-confidence. We hope you can applaud and admire the children’s creations as much as you can, as your encouragement is the cornerstone for those children to grow up happily and face challenges confidently.
Heart As A Painter Cultivates Wisdom
President of Kids Art Education Academy, ROC / Wu Long Rong
Venerable Master Hsing Yun said in the ‘Humanistic Buddhism Quotes’ that ‘A heart can paint beautiful universe, and a wonderful mortal world. Therefore we say “the heart is like a painter. It paints everything”. If in our minds we treat everyone with gratitude, we would perceive the world as a lovely place.’ The Master’s words give penetrating insight for the profound teaching of Buddhism and painting. Buddhist teaching has great influence on our societal cultivation and philosophical thinking. Ranging from architecture, sculpture, music, dance, literature to painting, Buddhist teaching is embedded in all of them. The area of art is especially worthy of investigation.
This year’s Fo Guang Yuan Young Artist Drawing Competition promotes Venerable Master Hsiung Yun’s ideal of the Four Giving, ‘Give people confidence, give people joy, give people hope, and give people convenience’, in hopes of implementing the teaching into real life. When children have real life experience of ‘giving is better than receiving’, a sense of gratitude and humility would derive from within. This way they can feel the splendid significance of life. The sponsor unit wishes for children to pick up their coloring pencils and draw what touches their young hearts. To put abstract feelings into concrete pictures is a valuable and meaningful action.
Drawings for this competition come from local and overseas contestants. The local is divided into junior high school, upper, middle and lower elementary school, and kindergarten, five groups in total. The overseas group classification is the same as the local’s. Within the framework of The Four Giving, the children are encouraged to use various materials to wave their creative wand and establish their own style. We received numerous entries; their feelings true, their emotions touching. In the award-winning pieces, we can see not only kind and peaceful expressions, but what’s more rare and commendable is the young artists’ ability to transform life experience into focused artwork. Their simple and innocent quality is truly admirable.
It’s been ten years since we first started the Fo Guang Yuan Young Artist Drawing Competition. For all these years, we are happy to see that many young artists diligently continue their art creation. And we also see the long-term devotion of volunteers who guide the viewers into the world of art. These are the seeds of good intentions we have been planting for ten years, so that beauty could nourish life, and open the door of aesthetic energy.
There are hundreds and thousands of entryways for Buddhism, all of them equal. If drawing can bring us into the door and inspire further learning, it can also help us gain wisdom and enlightenment. To practice the Three Goodness and the Four Giving is the Humanistic Buddhism’s way of engaging followers into the world. Thanks for the Fo Guang Shan’s young artist drawing activity, the children have the chance to gather for the Buddhist teaching, and take root in bodhi. Our life will end, but art goes on. It is my wish that all the young artists remember their initial intentions to bring art into real life, cultivate wisdom and propagate Humanistic Buddhism.
Good. Very good indeed!
With a Coloring Pencil, Draw Harmonious and Bright Homeland of ‘Three-Goodness’
Director of the Mid-Taiwan Art Association / Ni Chao Long
With the purpose of ‘propagating Buddhism through culture’, elevating life esthetics, humanistic accomplishment and improving kindhearted practice in the society, the curator of Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery has long held various humanistic and artistic activities that go deeply into schools and the society. Especially the Young Artist Drawing Competition, it’s been a whole decade since it was first held.
The tenth drawing competition aspires after ‘Three Goodness’ and ‘Four Giving’. It allows children to develop ‘heart’ awareness, feelings, and thinking through immersing in beauty, and then advance to learning Master Hsing Yun’s ‘Three Goodness’ – do good things, say good words and have good thoughts, as well as ‘Four Giving’ – give people confidence, give people joy, give people hope, and give people convenience. The effort that’s put into children’s moral education is truly solid. Over the past ten years, parents and schools have offered their support passionately, and the events have reached fourteen countries. Nationwide, this drawing competition has attracted most contestants and reached the farthest corners. It is really touching.
This year, we received almost 15000 entries, and after the preliminary and second review, finally 326 award-winning pieces were selected. The five judges carefully applied just and fair discernment to review the artworks, and after a day’s work, the outstanding artworks were finally selected. Throughout the process, we saw enthusiastic volunteers perform with great efficiency, and it was a sight to admire. To be frank, if it hadn’t been for the volunteers from far away Ping-Tung, we wouldn’t have finished in one day. Great work, everyone!
For children, drawing is a reflection of their inner self. Their enjoyment, innocence and intuitive fun can be seen in every piece. So every time we judge or guide children to draw, their innocence, romance, intensity and boldness arouse a sense of pleasure within us. It was the same this time. We were so happy to see the richness of children’s imagination, creativity, organizational abilities and love.
However, the theme-based ‘Three Goodness’ and ‘Four Giving’ drawing competition may seem simple, it required story-like descriptions. So some children’s character display seemed a little stiff, in consequence their free expression was decreased. Moreover, in recent years the art class in elementary schools is only a part of the ‘Art & Humanism’ field, this reduces the teaching hours; also due to the change in the teacher-training system, there has been a gap in art teachers. When teachers lack proficiency , don’t have knowledge of educational psychology, and can’t respect children’s independence and creativity, their attempt to alter children’s artwork would become a serious issue. This is a great cause of concern for the future of our children’s art education.
Fortunately, there are organizations, corporations and religious societies such as Fo Guang Shan continuously promoting art culture, so we can still have hopes for a bright future in art education. With our united effort, we hope to bring harmony and light to our homes, the society and the country.
Inner Light
Director of Kids Art Education Academy, ROC / Lu An-Lai
Fo Guang Shan Foundation for Buddhist Culture & Education and the Headquarters of Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery together have held the ‘International Fo Guang Yuan Young Artist Award’ for ten years. The entries received were numerous, and the reviewing procedure careful. Every piece selected was outstanding. It was my honor to be a reviewer this year, and here are my thoughts about the event:
1.I want to thank the hosting unit for it dedication. This event shoulders the function of social art education. Through Master Hsing Yun’s propagation of ‘give people confidence, give people joy, give people hope, and give people convenience’, children have the chance to observe the people and things around them, and put them in their drawings. This not only promotes cultural exchange, it also gives the children a stage to shine their inner light.
2.Children’s creative drawings carry their own unique feelings of the soul. They show spontaneity and convey meaning, which the adults (parents or teachers) shouldn’t interfere too much. This event might be highly competitive and some adults were so eager for the children to win that they imposed their will onto the children or even drew for them. This takes away the meaning and deprives the children of their autonomy and confidence. This causes harm to the children and is more a loss than gain. What a shame.
3.To go on for the tenth year is not an easy thing. But from the numerous entries we know that the event is approved by children and parents alike. A competition not only offers a stage for the ocntestants, but it also bears the hope for the contestants to reap more fruit of success. “Give people confidence, give people joy, give people hope, and give people conveience’. Hope the hosting unit can increase the number of awards in the future, to give the contestants more confidence, more joy, more hope, more convenience, and more opportunity to show.
